DIY Squirrel House

We have an abundance of lovely garden birds and the occasional seafaring bird visiting our garden for seeds and fatty treats. We love to accommodate them with food, water and nesting boxes made by Nathan.
Up until a few months ago we had never seen a squirrel in our garden.

Watching the cheeky little squirrel and his daring acrobatic display to munch on the bird seeds was very sweet. We thought he was adorable and wanted to make him a proper little place where he could feed and rest from the elements. Nathan being the clever craftsman he is, found some easy instructions for a DIY squirrel house. Nathan is a fast worker so I didn't manage to to take any photos of the construction. He made the squirrel house in under an hour from scraps of wood we had lying around from previous projects. He highly recommends the DIY if you want to give it a go yourself!
A few days after construction, I saw Squirrel Nutkins climb into the house and gingerly creep into the glass jar and eat the seeds.
And then the little cutie was off!
The seeds have depleted so we are pretty sure that Mr Nutkins has been back and perhaps some of his friends have popped by for a snack too?

  2. Oh good for you taking care of the darling squirrel. Most people try to get rid of them in favor of the birds whose food they eat. I had some squirrel visitors for a long while and they cured me of my phobia of rodents (couldn't even look at a pic of a rat in a movie before). They all had names and would eat out of my hand. Our fave, Scruffy, would come to the sliding door and flirt with the cats. She's gone now and I guess all her litter mates too so my squirrel feeding days are over but I'll always remember her with so much love. Squirrels are very smart and friendly and loving and will be happy to befriend you and bring you their babies to meet. It's good you made them a home. ♥

  4. love that. going to get husband to make one, we have three regular squirrels in our garden, I've no doubt at all that they'd use it.
I made husband make a ladybird hotel a few years ago, I'm sure he could have a go at this too.

Have a lovely day, lovely lady xx

  7. Adorable little squirrel house! Thank you for the link to the plans & instructions to make one. We have LOTS of squirrels in our garden who manage to finish off most of the bird seed & suet cakes before any of the birds can get to it. I think a squirrel house would be perfect for our garden too ♥
